finishing the series challenge

At Socrates' Book Review you will find the Finishing the Series Challenge.  Any series that you've started, but aren't caught up on and want to get caught up on .... well, now's your chance to catch up and join in on a challenge!

This will be my first time actually participating in the challenge but there are so many series(es?) that I need to catch up on and finish that I'm going with Level 3 which is to finish 3 or more.  For most of these I only need to finish a couple of books to complete, but if I find a new series to start I might add it to this list!

150+ reading challenge for 2013

I've got to admit, I did awful with this challenge last year.  I aim to do much better this year although I'm going to be a bit conservative in my estimating how much I'll read.

Amy over at My Overstuffed Bookshelf is hosting the 150+ Reading Challenge again this year.  Head on over here to sign up!

This year I'm going to say I will read 168 books.  That's only 14 books a month so I should be able to handle that.  I think I'll reevaluate in a couple of months and decided whether I want to go for more or maybe less.  There's so many books I want to read this year, so many books coming out that I NEED to read so I'm hoping that will be enough to get me going.

Good luck to me!

A quiet story that intricately weaves the stories of a mother, an angry and abused boy, an old woman and two fairy like creatures, Gossamer is a perfect bedtime story.

Littlest One is a fairy like creature that delivers dreams to humans as they sleep.  She is still being trained and she is a curious, playful little thing.  Her teacher sees the potential in her and guides her through the processes that suddenly become much more difficult when the Sinisteeds appear.

Short and sweet.  Truly.

When John Green & David Levithan decided to collaborate on a book together they decided to split up the work as evenly as possible.  Green wrote the odd numbered chapters, Levithan the even.  Levithan chose the first names of the characters and Green chose the surnames.  It seemed to work out quite well.

What I loved about this book was despite how over-the-top things started to get there was an air of reality to the whole thing.  Neither author writes their parents to be annoying, controlling or hated parents the way a lot of ya books do.  Despite Will Grayson #2's depression and overall hatred towards everything his mother is the one person he truly loves and she is a fully fleshed out character.  She is compassionate and wise and normal.  Will Grayson #1's parents are the same way.  Normal.  And I liked that.

The writing is spectacular, of course.  The story jumps back and forth between each Will Grayson and you are able to see the evolution of both characters as the story progresses.

Where WG#1 is insecure and teenaged angsty in an almost stereotypical way WG#2 is medicated and gothy with a sharp, witty mind.  He is sarcastic and self-deprecating, but probably the one character who seems to struggle less with his emotions than others.

This was a good read.  Not as good as Paper Towns.  While the characters are similar, Paper Towns just really had me devouring that book.
